The Fort Mill Democratic Forum will be meeting on Monday, September 13, 2010, 7pm at the Towne Tavern which is located at 2000 Highway 160 in Fort Mill.   Guest speaker will be Tom Elliott, Democratic Candidate for S.C. Commissioner of Agriculture. The meeting includes a self-pay dinner at 6:30pm.  All are very welcome and encouraged to bring some canned food items such as stews, hearty soups or meat for the community outreach center - A Place for Hope.

So, please come out that afternoon and join us for some free BBQ and hear from our outstanding slate of Democratic candidates.

Sheheen Yard-Signs and Bumper Stickers

I’ve had many people ask me for Sheheen yard-signs and bumper stickers over the last couple of months.  This past week, we received are allotment from Vincent’s campaign.  Bear in mind that Vincent has 46 counties to cover and that they are trying to save most of their money for television and GOTV.  Accordingly, we only have 200 yard-signs.  Given this limited amount, it’s important that we make sure that they end up in yards as opposed to at random intersections.  So, if you’d like a yard-sign for your yard, please email me at  richards.mccrae @ mortongettys. com and let me know.  We’ll make sure that we get a sign in your yard ASAP.  This will be first-come, first-serve.  Thanks.

1. When signing up for YorkDems, please tell us a little bit about yourself.  You are not required to do so but since communication is important, we’d like to know why you are in the list.
2. Bear in mind that some members receive a daily “digest” of postings, others receive individual emails every time something is posted, and anyone can browse the postings all the way back to the beginning of the Yorkdems group. If you find an article you think will be of interest, please consider its length. Instead of copying and pasting a long article which not everyone may not care to read in full, paste the URL or web address where the article can be found, and perhaps a short summary, sample paragraph, and/or your own thoughts on the piece.
3. Please always identify yourself by signing your messages with your name.  Please do not assume that others know who you are based solely on your email address.
4. Be friendly!  Remember that posting entire messages in all capital letters comes across as yelling which is impolite in this forum.  Use of capital letters for emphasis is fine.  Also refrain from anything resembling name calling.  Referring to what someone has posted as dumb, crazy, etc. is not acceptable.  If you disagree with someone simply state your point of view in a mature manner.  Also refrain from “ranting” in your emails as this is a forum to discuss issues and ideas not one to pontificate about your personal point of view.
5. Please do not forward emails from campaigns.  Tell the group about where we may find the information; please don’t send every email from every campaign unless you explain why you think this is new information or breaking news.  Most of us either have already signed up for campaign information or don’t wish to do so.
6. Attachments are not allowed.  Documents may be uploaded to the yorkdems Files section at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/yorkdems/ or may be shared individually with others based on their request to have information sent to their email address directly.
7. Be welcoming! We want new folks to join in this group and bring new ideas.  When you see a new person joining the group, welcome them like they just moved in next door.
8. Remember that we all make mistakes.  If you receive multiple copies of a message simply delete them without making it into a big issue.  If the problems persist simply send a message asking the administrator if the problem can be resolved.
9. I look forward to hopefully seeing all of you tomorrow (5/14/2010) evening at 6:00 PM at the White Homestead in Fort Mill.  Just a reminder….We suggest a $50.00 per person donation.  The response thus far has been very encouraging.  With all of the candidates who will be joining us, it’s extremely important that we make a good showing.  Once again, I strongly encourage everyone who is able to attend and show their support for the York County Democratic Party and for our Democratic candidates.

Those challenges include: electing a Democratic Governor, electing a Senator we can be proud of, electing as many local Democrats as possible and – above all – reelecting John Spratt. As you can tell by reading the papers, Congressman Spratt has been targeted once again. This time his opponent will be well funded and will resort to anything as he has proven time and time again in his local races. We must rally around our Congressman!

We begin meeting the challenges by reorganizing our precincts on Saturday, February 20 from 10:00 am until noon. All the precincts will meet together at the Coal Yard Restaurant, 105 Garner Street, York, 29745 (just off Liberty Street/Highway 161 in downtown York). Coffee and snacks will be provided. We are meeting all precincts together this year so that Congressman Spratt can address all of us. At this Precinct Reorganization Meeting, individual precincts will also elect officers and pass resolutions. More information about the precinct meetings will follow. Remember, you must attend the Precinct Reorganization to be a voting delegate at the County Convention and to go to the State Convention.

The County Convention will be Monday, March 8 at 7:00 pm at the Freedom Center, 215 E. Main Street in Rock Hill. We will hear from local and state-wide candidates, pass resolutions on to the State Convention and elect county officers. A listing of the York County Democratic Party officers and their basic requirements for serving are on the reverse side of this letter.

The Convention will be a bittersweet time for me. As some of y’all know, Mary and I are moving. Soon we will no longer be residents of York County. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your chair. My last official act as chair will be to call the Convention to order.

Filing for elected public offices (county council, state legislature, etc.) will be March 13 through 30. Filing will again take place at the law offices of Morton and Gettys on Oakland Avenue in Rock Hill.
